Ozempic, Wegovy, and Obesity: A Look at the Mismatch Between Need and Clinic Locations

New Study Maps Semaglutide Weight Loss Clinic Deserts and Hotspots

Published July 1, 2024 • Updated September 10, 2024

In this data study, we examined the number of semaglutide clinics in each U.S. city and state. This study was conducted over a period of four months, from March to June 2024, involving approximately 120 hours of research and five SGS researchers.

The data below are updated continously as we revise our semaglutide and tirzepatide clinic database, currently the largest on the Internet. The key findings section is updated monthly.

Key Findings

Here are some key findings from this data study:

  1. There is a moderate negative correlation between a state's obesity rate and the number of its per-capita semaglutide clinics. States with a higher obesity rate have a lower number of semaglutide clinics. ↓ Jump to section
  2. Between May 12 and June 9 2024, Google Search interest for the terms "semaglutide", "tirzepatide", "ozempic", and "wegovy" reached their all-time highs. ↓ Jump to section

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide, more commonly known by brand names including Wegovy and Ozempic, is a medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and for chronic weight management. This versatile medication has shown significant efficacy in improving glycemic control and facilitating weight loss.[17]

It works by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 to enhance insulin secretion, suppress glucagon release, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite. Semaglutide is marketed under several brand names:

Obesity Rate Correlation to Semaglutide Clinic Count

The Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) between state obesity rate and the number of semaglutide clinics per capita is -0.464.[12][13][16] This suggests a moderate negative correlation between a state's obesity rate and the number of semaglutide clinics per capita in the state.

In other words, states with a higher rate of obesity actually have a lower number of clinics per capita.

This could be due to a higher rate of obesity in states that have a lower GDP per capita. Further research will be performed in an upcoming SGS pricing study. Get notified when it's published.
